Frequently Asked Questions

How can I identify an Alumawood® shade structure?

Made with quality materials and an attention to detail, Alumawood shade structures are one of the best in the aluminum patio cover market. Each component of an Alumawood shade structure is manufactured from structural-grade aluminum alloys and finished with our exclusive high-performance coating system Aluma-Shield with Teflon® surface protector, which is backed by our limited lifetime warranty. Each patio cover system is designed to assemble with flawless fit and engineered for building code requirements throughout the United States. Every design and detail has been carefully considered to enhance the aesthetic appeal and the natural wood appearance. There are a few ways to ensure you are buying a real Alumawood shade structure. Each order of an Alumawood system includes a packing slip from Amerimax Home Products. You can obtain this packing slip from where you purchased your Alumawood shade structure. Alumawood shade structures that were purchased after February 2004 will have “AMERIMAX ALUMAWOOD” stamped in black ink inside the 2′ x 6′ rafters and 3′ x 8′ headers (also known as header beams). Once product is received, take off the end caps of the 2′ x 6′ rafters or 3′ x 8′ headers and look inside for the “AMERIMAX ALUMAWOOD” ink stamp.

What are the benefits of Alumawood shade structures?

Alumawood shade structures are constructed of embossed aluminum with a textured, wood-grain finish. The structures are built with heavy header beams and a weather-resistant Aluma-Shield paint system with Teflon® additive that withstands sun, rain, wind and extreme temperatures. Alumawood shade structures need virtually no maintenance. Unlike real wood, Alumawood shade structures won't burn, crack, peel, warp, rot or attract termites. Our environmentally friendly Alumawood shade structures are made from recycled aluminum. Alumawood shade structures come in two different styles to suit your needs. If you want added shade but prefer partial sun and refreshing breezes, our lattice patio cover is the ideal solution. However, our solid roof patio cover provides you and your outdoor furniture with the best protection against the elements. You'll be able to enjoy your outdoor living space even when the weather isn't ideal.

Are Alumawood shade structures structurally engineered?

Yes. Products comply with the 2009 and 2012 International Building Code, and 2010 and 2013 California Building Code. For specific questions on wind, snow and live load requirements, contact your local building department.

What type of paint coating is applied to Alumawood shade structures?

Amerimax uses a weather-resistant, anti-corrosive Aluma-Shield paint system with Teflon® surface protector. It is the most durable paint system in the aluminum patio cover market. The paint system withstands the harshest conditions, including sun, rain, wind and extreme temperatures.

Do you provide a warranty on your Alumawood shade structures?

Care & Maintenance

The Beauty of Wood, Minus the Maintenance

Alumawood shade structures are easy to maintain. Generally, normal rainfall is all it takes to keep them looking clean. Our systems won’t crack, peel, warp or rot. They’re also termite-proof and will never need painting.

Moderate Dirt

An occasional washing with clear water using a garden hose and soft-bristled brush is recommended. (A long-handled car-washing brush is ideal for this purpose.)

Environmental Black Streaking

Black streaking can also collect on the surface of a structure as a result of numerous environmental factors. Please consult with the installer on the best way to remove the streaking from your unit.

Caulking Compounds

Use mineral spirits in reasonable amounts, apply directly to foreign substance. Rinse the area thoroughly with water immediately after cleaning.

Heavier Dirt Accumulation

Wash in the manner indicated to the left but use the following solution:

1/3 cup detergent (e.g. Tide® )
2/3 cup trisodium phosphate powder (also known as T.S.P.)
1 gallon water

Mildew Accumulation

Mildew can collect on surfaces of all types of building products and is often evident on surfaces that have not been properly maintained. Normally, mildew will appear as black spots. Mildew is easy to remove by using the following cleaning solution:

1/3 cup detergent (e.g. Tide)
2/3 cup trisodium phosphate powder (also known as T.S.P.)
1 quart sodium hypochloride 5% solution (e.g. Clorox® )
3 quarts water
