Build Your Ideal Outdoor Living Space: Patio Decor Trends for This Season

August 9, 2011

Wicker is in for patio decor!

When it’s time to build a new patio shade structure, or just update your favorite outdoor living space, hitting on that perfect design scheme can be a welcome challenge. In addition to our recent post about patio dos and don’ts, we want you to make sure you’re staying in style and on trend this year! Whether you’re outfitting a simple deck or a snazzy pergola, knowing what’s in store for the upcoming season can help you choose a fresh, cutting-edge design that fits your needs – and your style – like a glove.

Bold Colors

The use of a bold color, when handled with care, can create a classy, tied-together look that’s easy to put together and easy to maintain. For example, using splashes of red on the walls, in pillow cushions, and in a hardy outdoor rug can elevate your patio’s style to the next level. Decorate the interior of a pergola with a single bold color scheme like this one to create a sophisticated oasis with modern flair. Even if you opt for a more muted palette, using a bold color as an accent in a rug or a throw can add an eye-catching hint of drama.

Candle-Lit Class

Old-fashioned candles and candle lanterns are making a comeback in today’s outdoor design. To achieve the look, hang candle lanterns in the “windows” or openings of a pergola or patio shade structure; place tea lights along the mantle of an outdoor fireplace; or use pillar candles of varying heights as table centerpieces. It’s only common sense that you should never leave burning candles unattended. But when you host a party or an intimate evening for two in your outdoor paradise, the addition of flickering candlelight adds a little twinkle – and a lot of romance – after the sun goes down.

White is Just Right

You can’t go wrong with classic white for any  porch or patio structure. Think Charleston chic – a long white piazza in the afternoon sunlight, iced tea and lemonade on the table, music in the air. To achieve the classic look, paint columns and railings a crisp white. Consider using white furniture as well, or at least white cushions. Decorate using the color scheme of your choice in a few luxuries like throw pillows or blankets, but allow the white theme room to shine.

 Wicker is In

Again, envision shades of old Charleston: woven wicker furniture in shades of white, naturals, and Charleston greens so deep they nearly fade to black. Chairs, love seats, couches, and even tables in high-quality wicker styling can tie a room together with a self-assured, yet soft-spoken, fashion statement. In keeping with the classic styling of candlelight, simple bold colors, and sweeping white palettes, timeless wicker embodies a relaxed country chic that speaks to the new century.
